For a country to be self-sufficient and economically viable, it is necessary to tap its natural resources through science and technology and discover processes and develop to utilize them to the maximum to improve the quality of life of the people.  It is, therefore, necessary to build up scientific and technological capability in Pakistan commensurate with the needs of the country.

In 1975, the Government of the Punjab decided to set up four Engineering College at Taxila, Multan, Faisalabad and Bahawalpur in the same order of priority.  In accordance with the decision of the Punjab Cabinet, the first Engineering College initially started functioning at Sahiwal and was later, in 1978, shifted to Taxila where as a second campus of the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore.  Recently, its status has been raised to an independent University of Engineering and Technology.  The proposal for the second College of Engineering and Tech, at Multan was submitted to the Ministry of Education through University Grants Commission in 1984.  The proposal was however, dropped by the Cabinet Committee in 1985.  Nevertheless, the demand for establishing a College of Engineering at Multan had been raised time and again by the people of Multan region.  The President of Pakistan during his visit to Multan in December, 1983, announced the establishment of the College of Engineering and Technology at Multan

After the issuance of the directive of the President in 1987, the Governor of the Punjab in his capacity as Chancellor of the Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan, constituted a Committee finalizing recommendations for setting up the College of Engineering at Multan as a Constituent College of the Bahauddin Zakariya University.  The recommendations of the committee, after going through various bodies, were finally approved by the ECNEC in September, 1990.

The College of Engineering and Technology is a Constituent College of the Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan.  Its broad objective produce Engineers at undergraduate level with bachelor's degree conventional fields of Civil, Architectural, Electrical, Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering meet the engineering and technological manpower requirements province/country.

The college offers courses leading to the award of four years engineering degree in Civil, Electrical, Computer and Mechanical Engineering and Five year engineering Degree in Architectural Engineering.  College envisages providing teaching facilities to 600 students an annual intake of 150 students (in all disciplines of engineering) after the completion of the project.  Initially, due to certain spatial, financial and administrative constraints, the University started Civil Engineering Programme in 1994.  Later in October, 1997, the Electrical Engineering Programme was also started.
