Introduction
The Department of Statistics is one of the pioneer departments of the University those started their functioning in a rented building in Gulgasht Colony right from the establishment of the University in 1975. It was shifted to “Statistics and Mathematics Block”at the University Campus in 1987. Presently, the Department is situated in aseparate building, adjacent to the older one. Despite its very humble start, the Department can now be compared with any top-ranking teaching department of the subject in any university of Pakistan. The teaching faculty of the Department consists of 11 Teachers and all of them are P.hD. degree holder.
Statistics lies at the heart of quantitative reasoning and analyses that is essential for solving problems in diverse contexts for appropriate decision making. Statistical skills enable intelligent data collection, analyses and interpretation for decision support in various fields e.g., economics, business and public policy, as well as for research and development in various science disciplines, such as medicine, bioinformatics, forensics, image reconstruction and several others. No doubt, Statistics is the only subject of its own that can bridge-up many disciplines through data and analysis. The demand for statisticians is quite high and growing fast.
To get flawless connection with the current world, we need a rapid transportation of information. This need can be fulfilled by the frequent use of computer and emerging technology. The Department has equipped its laboratories with latest computers, multimedia projectors, scanners, and audio-visual system. These laboratories provide all the facilities for Computing Statistics, Data Processing, Computer Programming and Data Analysis for research. Modern statistical packages/ languages like R, STATA, MINITAB, E-Views, and SPSS etc. are made available to the faculty members and researchers in the computer laboratory of the Department.
The Department is connected with the University Local Area Network (LAN) Server, providing internet facilities to the teachers, research scholars and the students. Printing services, with high quality printers, are also available.
Recently, the Department has established a new separate dedicated building for its library. This library owns a variety of latest books and a collection of prominent research journals of the subject. The Department does not believe in quantity solely, therefore, good quality, expensive and rare books are also made available in the library. An audio-visual system has also been acquired to exhibit recorded lectures of experts of national and international repute to the students.
Study tours of the students to various Statistics Departments/Institutions and Organizations are also being arranged by the Department as a part of its study program to highlight the importance and implementation of Statistics in practical life.
To meet emerging challenges in the present era of online knowledge-sharing and marketing, the Department launched its own Android App, “STATBZU” on May 27, 2019. This app explores all the main features and information about the Department including academic programs, faculty, departmental activities, and list of titles of Ph.D. theses, produced by the Department etc. An online access to the catalogue of available books in the library and job portal are also among prominent features of this app. Thus, the Department has become the pioneer in the subject in Pakistan after providing such facilities to its students.
Since its inception, the Department did not have any alumni or association. An organization’s alumni are the reflection of its past, representation of its present and a link to its future. Now educational institutions are changing the way they see and interact with their alumni community. With the advent of Social Media, alumni relationship has taken a different flavour altogether. Universities have started to harness the power of alumni through various networking platforms like Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, etc. by creating their alumni groups and profiles on them.
Keeping in view the need of time, recently, the Department of Statistics has initiated its Alumni, that is, Zakariyan Alumni of Statistics (ZAS). This Alumni has been approved by the Competent Authority of BZU. Now with the cooperation of the enrolling ZAS members, the ZAS would start to function in order to knit a network of the Zakariyan graduates in Statistics that may play its vital role to meet the emerging needs in the domain of Statistics. An Online Directory of the ZAS members is also available through the Departmental website (www.stat.bzu.edu.pk) and the above stated Android App.
Since its inception, the Department has been offering classes of M.Sc. Statistics. Over 3,150 students have been awarded Master of Science in Statistics. A regular Ph.D. Program in Statistics has been going on since 2005 and 36 scholars have earned their doctorate degrees.
Many scholars have submitted their theses while several scholars are progressing for their Ph.D. research work. Moreover, the HEC awardees are also pursuing their research here as the Department has HEC accredited supervisors among its faculty. The Department started M.Phil.leading to Ph.D. program in 2001 on regular basis and over 380 students have earned their M.Phil. degrees.
The Department is vigorously involved in research activities under supervision of the senior faculty members of the Department. The Departmentparticipates enthusiastically, in the activities for the promotion of research in the subject. The presentation of a variety of research papers, seminars, and lectures delivered by the faculty members and students at different forums are the testimony of its agility.
Our graduates are working in industry, various research centers involved in agricultural research, medical research, market research companies, insurance companies, investment banks, in public sector analysis and planning, as well as in universities as academicians.
