As per the vision of the Punjab Government and following the approval from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) in 1990, the Mechanical Engineering Department (MED) was established in 2004 as part of the University College of Engineering and Technology. At the time of its inception, it was the only department in South Punjab offering a B.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Initially, the program followed an annual assessment system, which was later upgraded to a term system, and subsequently to the semester system. In alignment with the latest advancements in educational practices, the department has successfully implemented the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) system within the semester framework. Currently, the B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering degree is accredited by the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) at Level-II under the Washington Accord.

The department comprises 14 permanent faculty members, of whom 10 hold Ph.D. degrees, while one faculty member is currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program. Additionally, there are 4 Lab Engineers who support students with hands-on training using the latest mechanical engineering equipment and software tools.

The curriculum is designed in accordance with the latest field requirements and the criteria set by HEC and PEC. It includes specialized courses in Thermal Power, Design, Artificial Intelligence, Manufacturing, Engineering Mechanics, Robotics and Automation, as well as interdisciplinary, natural sciences, and management courses to equip students with the latest tools and techniques in mechanical engineering.

In 2021, the department launched a postgraduate program (MS in Mechanical Engineering) aimed at fostering a research-oriented academic environment. The primary goal of this research-based program is to develop practical solutions to engineering challenges faced by the global community. The department also plans to commence its Ph.D. program in the near future.
