The Department of Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU), Multan, has taken an important step towards promoting innovation in veterinary sciences through the submission of two patent applications to the Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) of Pakistan under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Saleem Akhtar, Chairman, Department of Clinical Sciences.
The two innovations address practical needs in veterinary education and clinical training, particularly in bovine reproductive examination and laparoscopic procedures in small ruminants.
Bovine Rectal Palpation Simulator
The Bovine Rectal Palpation Simulator, developed by Prof. Dr. Saleem Akhtar, is designed to support practical training in veterinary theriogenology and bovine reproductive examination. Rectal palpation is an important clinical skill used in cattle reproductive management, including the examination of reproductive organs and pregnancy diagnosis.
The simulator aims to provide veterinary students with opportunities to practise examination techniques in a controlled learning environment before performing these procedures on live animals. It has the potential to support skill development, improve student confidence, and facilitate structured practical training.
A Cradle for Laparoscopic Procedures in Small Ruminants
The second innovation, “A Cradle for Laparoscopic Procedures in Small Ruminants (Sheep and Goats),” was developed by Dr. Ejaz Ahmad, Associate Professor, Department of Clinical Sciences.
The device addresses an important aspect of laparoscopic procedures in sheep and goats by providing a dedicated cradle intended to support animal positioning during surgical and reproductive procedures. Such equipment can contribute to practical training and the development of laparoscopic techniques in small ruminants.
Promoting Research and Practical Innovation
The submission of these two patent applications reflects the Department of Clinical Sciences’ commitment to encouraging faculty-led innovation and developing practical solutions to challenges in veterinary education and clinical practice.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Saleem Akhtar, the department continues to promote research initiatives that connect scientific knowledge with practical veterinary applications. The contributions of Prof. Dr. Saleem Akhtar and Dr. Ejaz Ahmad demonstrate the role of faculty research in developing innovative training tools and equipment relevant to veterinary sciences.
These patent applications represent an important step towards intellectual property protection and the potential practical application of locally developed innovations. The department aims to continue fostering a research-oriented environment that supports creativity, technological development, and the advancement of veterinary education at Bahauddin Zakariya University.
