Established in 1975 as one of the founding academic departments of Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU), the School of Economics has played a pioneering role in economics education, research, and policy development in Pakistan for nearly five decades. In recognition of its sustained academic excellence and expanding contribution to higher education, the Department was elevated to the status of an independent School of Economics in 2015. Today, it stands as the only stand-alone School of Economics in South Punjab and is widely recognised as the region's premier institution for economics education, research, policy engagement, and intellectual leadership.
Over the past five decades, the School has produced thousands of graduates who have distinguished themselves in academia, public administration, financial institutions, international organisations, development agencies, the corporate sector, and policymaking bodies. Its graduates serve in leadership positions across Pakistan and abroad, making significant contributions to economic development, public policy, higher education, and research.
The School currently comprises 17 full-time faculty members, including 13 PhD-qualified academics educated at prestigious national and international universities. The Director has completed postdoctoral research at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), United Kingdom, bringing international academic exposure and global best practices to the School. Faculty members actively undertake high-quality research and publish extensively in HEC-recognised and internationally indexed peer-reviewed journals. Their expertise spans Development Economics, Public Finance, Financial Economics, Environmental Economics, Health Economics, Agricultural Economics, International Economics, Labour Economics, Behavioural Economics, Public Policy, Applied Econometrics, and other specialised areas of economics.
As the only stand-alone School of Economics in South Punjab, the School has earned a distinguished reputation as the region's leading centre for economics education and research. Its academic influence extends well beyond its own campus, with a substantial number of its graduates serving as faculty members, researchers, and academic administrators in universities across South Punjab and Pakistan, including Bahauddin Zakariya University sub-campuses, NCBA&E, University of Southern Punjab (USP), Emerson University Multan, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture Multan, Women University Multan, and several other public and private universities. This extensive alumni network reflects the School's enduring contribution to strengthening higher education, developing academic leadership, and building research capacity throughout the region.
The School offers a comprehensive portfolio of undergraduate programmes designed to prepare students for successful careers in academia, government, finance, business, research, and development organisations. The flagship BS Economics programme provides rigorous training in economic theory, quantitative methods, econometrics, and policy analysis. Responding to emerging global trends and evolving labour market demands, the School has introduced specialised undergraduate programmes in BS Economics with Finance, BS Economics with Business, and BS Economics with Data Science. These innovative programmes integrate economics with finance, business management, and modern data analytics, equipping graduates with interdisciplinary knowledge and analytical skills that are increasingly sought by employers and leading universities worldwide.
At the postgraduate level, the School offers MPhil Economics and PhD Economics programmes that combine rigorous theoretical foundations with advanced empirical and quantitative research. Students receive specialised training in Development Economics, Financial Economics, Public Finance, Environmental Economics, Applied Econometrics, and Public Policy, supported by comprehensive instruction in mathematics, statistics, econometric modelling, computer applications, and advanced research methodologies. These programmes are designed to produce highly competent researchers, university faculty, economists, policymakers, and development professionals capable of addressing complex economic challenges through evidence-based research. To date, the School has produced more than 600 MPhil graduates and over 60 PhD graduates, while approximately 1,000 students are currently enrolled across its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Recognising the changing dynamics of national and global economies, the School has diversified its academic portfolio through specialised Postgraduate Diploma programmes in Logistics and Transport Economics, Health Economics, and Industrial Economics. These programmes have been developed to address emerging policy and industry needs, particularly those arising from regional economic integration, industrial transformation, healthcare reforms, and opportunities associated with the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Internationalisation is a key pillar of the School's strategic vision. Bahauddin Zakariya University has established academic partnerships through Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the School of Economics, Finance and Banking, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and Putra Business School (PBS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). These collaborations promote faculty and student exchanges, joint research projects, curriculum development, conferences, academic networking, and knowledge sharing, thereby strengthening the School's global engagement and research capacity.
The School has also established a strategic partnership with the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) through a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that bridges academia and industry. This collaboration provides students and faculty with opportunities for internships, seminars, policy dialogues, guest lectures, collaborative research, professional training, and capacity-building initiatives. Through this partnership, students gain valuable exposure to contemporary issues in monetary policy, banking, financial stability, financial inclusion, and macroeconomic management while interacting closely with Pakistan's central bank.
Research excellence remains one of the defining characteristics of the School. Faculty members actively undertake interdisciplinary and policy-oriented research addressing major national and global challenges, including sustainable development, fiscal policy, poverty alleviation, climate change, food security, governance, financial development, labour markets, regional integration, and economic policy. The School encourages collaborative research through national and international partnerships, competitive research grants, conferences, seminars, workshops, and policy dialogues, contributing significantly to evidence-based policymaking and socio-economic development.
A defining strength of the School is its distinguished alumni network and dynamic academic community. The School has produced generations of economists and academic leaders who continue to shape higher education, public policy, financial institutions, and economic governance in Pakistan. Among its most distinguished alumni is Dr. Nadeem Javaid (Sitara-e-Imtiaz), Vice Chancellor of the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), former Chief Economist of Pakistan, and one of the country's leading policymakers. The School also takes pride in Prof. Dr. Muhammad Omer Chaudhary, a distinguished former faculty member, who currently serves as the Vice Chancellor of Government College University, Lahore. Their remarkable achievements exemplify the School's enduring commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and public service, and continue to inspire future generations of economists and policymakers.
Beyond academic excellence, the School fosters a vibrant student experience through an active network of academic, professional, and co-curricular organisations. Student leadership and engagement are promoted through initiatives such as the Zakariyan Economists Alumni Society (ZEAST), which strengthens lifelong connections between alumni, students, and faculty while facilitating mentoring, networking, and professional development. The School also encourages creativity, leadership, discipline, and teamwork through student organisations including the SEEC Art Club, SEEC Discipline Committee, and several other academic and social forums. Regular seminars, workshops, policy dialogues, competitions, community engagement activities, and cultural events provide students with opportunities to develop leadership qualities, communication skills, creativity, and professional competence beyond the classroom.
The School provides an intellectually stimulating learning environment supported by modern academic infrastructure. Students have access to a well-equipped library containing more than 5,000 books, an extensive collection of national and international journals, digital learning resources, modern computer laboratories, econometric and statistical software, and campus-wide high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity. These facilities enable students to acquire strong analytical, quantitative, and research skills in accordance with international academic standards.
Building upon a distinguished legacy spanning nearly five decades, the School of Economics continues to pursue excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and public service. Supported by highly qualified faculty, a distinguished alumni network, modern academic facilities, strong national and international partnerships, and expanding global collaborations, the School remains committed to producing economists, researchers, policymakers, and future leaders capable of addressing the complex economic challenges of the twenty-first century. As the premier and only stand-alone School of Economics in South Punjab, it continues to shape economic thought, inform public policy, advance research, and contribute meaningfully to Pakistan's sustainable economic and social development. Through its tradition of academic excellence and commitment to innovation, the School is steadily strengthening its position among the leading schools of economics in Pakistan and the broader region.
