Department of Sociology
The development and progress of any country is inseparable from the strength of its educational institutions. In Southern Punjab, the Department of Sociology at Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan, was established in 2001 to meet the growing demand for rigorous training in social and behavioral sciences. Since then, the Department has evolved into a dynamic centre of teaching, research and community engagement, committed to producing high-quality professionals and behavioral scientists who combine academic excellence with vision, courage and dedication. Our graduates are prepared to serve as an intellectual resource base for this region and to contribute meaningfully to the social and economic betterment of Pakistan through the development of skilled human resources.
Today, rapid transformations at regional, national and international levels—urbanization, demographic change, inequality, migration, religious and ethnic diversity, climate challenges and shifting labour markets—require new sociological thinking and evidence-based policy responses. At the same time, the rise of artificial intelligence, big data and the pervasive influence of social media are reshaping identities, relationships, work, politics and governance. The Department of Sociology equips students to understand and critically engage with these changes: from digital cultures and online movements to algorithmic bias, surveillance, data ethics and the impact of AI on social institutions. Our program blends classical sociological theory with cutting-edge analysis of the “platform society,” preparing students to interpret complex data, communicate across media and design interventions that promote inclusion, justice and sustainable development.
To support these objectives, the Department provides a well-equipped computer laboratory with access to the HEC Digital Library, enabling students to use global databases, e-journals and AI-driven research tools. A growing departmental library of more than 3,000 current titles and selected research journals further strengthens independent learning and research. Through this combination of regional grounding, national relevance and international outlook—anchored in the realities of the AI and social media age—the Department of Sociology at Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan, strives to raise academic standards and shape thoughtful, responsible leaders for an increasingly complex world.
