Introduction

The Department of Pharmacology was established in October 2017 after restructuring of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan in accordance with the directions of Pharmacy Council of Pakistan. It is dedicated to advancing the understanding of drug action and developing the next generation of experts in pharmacology. Department of Pharmacology offers a comprehensive range of courses and programs designed to meet the needs of both undergraduate and postgraduate students, providing a solid foundation in the principles of pharmacology and the latest advancements in the field.

For undergraduate students, it is offering 05 courses including Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology I, Pharmacology II and Pathology which are major components of the Pharm- D curriculum.

For postgraduate students, the Department of Pharmacology is offering M. Phil. in Pharmacology & Ph.D. in Pharmacology programs which are duly recognized and approved by Higher Education Commission and Pharmacy Council of Pakistan. Students are continuously engaged in hands-on laboratory experiences alongside theoretical knowledge to ensure the development of practical skills needed for careers in healthcare, academia & research, and the pharmaceutical industry. Currently, our alumni are serving at key positions in universities & research institutions, drug testing laboratories, pharmaceutical / healthcare industries, hospitals, pharmacies at national and international level.

Facilities and Resources

Animal House

Animal House at the department provides optimal care and housing for laboratory animals including rabbits, BALB/c mice, C57BL/6 mice and Sprague-Dawley rats, supporting a wide range of preclinical research studies in pharmacology while complying with international standards of ethics.

Laboratories

The Department of Pharmacology at BZU Multan is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories where students have access to the latest tools and technologies to conduct high-quality research in field of Neuropharmacology, Cardiovascular pharmacology, Cancer pharmacology and Natural products & Traditional Medicine.

Electroencephalography (EEG) Lab

It is first of its kind in Pakistan and equipped with dedicated power labs and bio amplifiers to record and analyze brain wave patterns from rodents, facilitating research in neurological and psychiatric disorders.

PCR Lab

PCR Lab is equipped with the latest thermal cyclers including ProFlex PCR system, StepOnePlus Real-Time PCR Systems along with nanodrop, electrophoresis and gel documentation system to carry out DNA and RNA analysis, crucial for genetic and pharmacogenomic research.

Behavioral Lab

The Behavioral Lab is designed to study the effects of drugs on behavior of lab animals, utilizing a range of tests and models to explore cognitive and emotional responses such as memory & learning, anxiety and depression.

Biochemical Lab

Biochemical Lab comprises of tissue homogenizers, plate readers, spectrophotometers, centrifuges and other accessory equipment to investigate the biochemical pathways and mechanisms of drug action.

Besides that, there are specified labs for undergraduate students for hands-on-training related to safety & efficacy testing of drugs, pathological and histological examination of body fluids and tissues.

Collaboration

In the Department of Pharmacology, we encourage interdisciplinary research and partnerships with industry, healthcare institutions, and other academic entities. Currently, many research projects are being executed through collaboration with international & national universities (King Saud University, University of Strasbourg, University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore), Drug Testing Laboratories etc. which has already produced publications in high-impact factor journals.

Admissions are conducted by the Departmental Admission Committee according to the admission criteria laid down by the University.

The Committee looks after the admission process and can be accessed for interpretation of the rules and regulations. However, migration from other Institutions will not be permitted.
