Introduction

The Department of Agricultural Business & Marketing (ABM) was established among the 10 departments within the establishment of an independent Faculty with the title “Faculty of Agricultural Sciences & Technology” in 2012.

ABM is a component of agriculture and related industries, Food and Natural Resources Pathways in Horticulture, Agricultural Mechanics & Technology, and Plant & Animal Systems. Therefore, it is an integral part of the faculty. The Department started the BS program in ABM during 2014-15. The Department has recently started its MS ABM & PhD ABM programs in Spring 2024.

Our vision is to be a driving force in the agriculture industry fostering sustainable economic practices, empowering stakeholders, and fueling economic growth We aspire to lead the way in transforming agriculture into a dynamic and resilient sector that enhances livelihood, promotes environmental stewardship, and ensures food security for all.

Mission Statement

To transform the traditional agri-culture into modern agri-business by creating employment opportunities and contributing to poverty alleviation through agriculture value chain development.

Program Objectives

The department aims to equip the students with the knowledge and skills required to analyze the agriculture business and marketing issues for transforming agri-culture into agri-business and its development, consistent with the interest of all stakeholders. The specified objectives of the degree program are as follows:

  • To produce skilled and productive graduates who understand and provide solutions for the key challenges to agriculture, agribusiness, agriculture marketing, policymakers, and rural communities.
  • To prepare students with multidisciplinary learning experiences to develop careers in agriculture, agribusiness, agriculture marketing, and related fields.
  • To provide professional training opportunities to students in the agribusiness industry through strong academia-industry partnerships.

On completion of the ABM degree, you will be able to develop or work in the following sectors:

  • Agricultural Consulting Services: The department offers specialized consulting services to farmers, agribusinesses, & industry stakeholders. These services provide valuable insights, strategic guidance, & tailored solutions to enhance operational efficiency, optimize production, & maximize profitability.
  • Policy Development & Advocacy: The department actively engages in policy development, collaborating with government bodies, industry associations, & research institutions to shape agricultural policies that support sustainable practices, stimulate innovation, & create a favorable business environment for the agriculture sector.
  • Research & Development: The department conducts cutting-edge research & development initiatives to advance agricultural practices, improve crop yields, & promote sustainable farming techniques. It collaborates with academic institutions, scientists, & experts to generate knowledge, innovation, & evidence-based solutions for the industry.
  • Capacity Building & Training Programs: The department provides comprehensive training programs, workshops, & capacity-building initiatives to equip farmers, agribusiness professionals, & entrepreneurs with the necessary skills, knowledge, & tools to succeed in the agriculture industry. These programs cover areas such as business management, financial planning, market analysis, & sustainable farming practices.
  • Market Analysis & Intelligence: The department offers market analysis & intelligence services to help farmers & agribusinesses make informed decisions regarding market trends, consumer preferences, & investment opportunities. It provides data-driven insights & actionable information to optimize market positioning, identify potential growth areas, & mitigate risks.
  • Entrepreneurship Support: The department facilitates entrepreneurship support programs, incubators, & accelerators for aspiring agricultural entrepreneurs. It offers guidance, mentorship, & access to networks & resources to nurture innovative startups & foster a culture of entrepreneurship within the agriculture industry.
  • Industry Collaboration & Partnerships: The department actively collaborates with industry stakeholders, including farmers' organizations, cooperatives, private enterprises, & non-profit organizations, to foster mutually beneficial partnerships. It drives collective action, leverages resources, & addresses common challenges to achieve sustainable agricultural development.
  • Sustainable Agriculture Initiatives: The department leads & supports initiatives focused on promoting sustainable agriculture practices, such as organic farming, agroforestry, soil health management, water conservation, & biodiversity conservation. It educates stakeholders, disseminates best practices, & adoption of environmentally friendly approaches to farming.
  • Market Development & Trade Promotion: The department plays a role in facilitating market development & trade promotion activities for agricultural products. It explores domestic & international market opportunities, conducts market assessments, & assists farmers & agribusinesses in accessing new markets, enhancing export competitiveness, & complying with international trade standards.
  • Agricultural Extension Services: The department provides agricultural extension services, delivering information, training, & technical support directly to farmers & rural communities. These services aim to enhance agricultural productivity, improve farming practices, & empower farmers with knowledge & skills to adapt to changing conditions & emerging challenges.

BS Agriculture Business & Marketing (ABM)

Undergraduate Program
Eligibility:

F.Sc. Pre-Medical / Pre-Engineering/ Pre-Agriculture; Intermediate with at least one subject of Economics/ Statistics /Mathematics; or I.C.S. / D. Com /I. Com; Three years diploma in Agriculture or Associate Engineering and Minimum requirement for admission is not less than 50% marks.

MS - Agriculture Business and Marketing (ABM)

Graduate (MS) Program
Eligibility:
  • BS Agriculture Business and Marketing
  • B.Sc. (Hons) Agriculture / Agriculture Economics / Marketing and Agribusiness / Agricultural and Resource Economics / Economics / Agribusiness / Agriculture Marketing
  • BBA Agri-business / BBA
  • Master’s or sixteen-year education in economics/ marketing/ business economics/ management or equivalent
  • Minimum requirement for admission is not less than 50% marks or 2.50/4.00 CGPA in 16 years of degree programs mentioned above
  • The intradisciplinary admission may only be allowed, if:
    • The admission committee is satisfied that the applicant’s knowledge of the primary area (level 6) has sufficiently prepared him or her to undertake the course of studies of the MS/MPhil/equivalent program (or, in the opinion of the admission committee, the preparation can be deemed satisfactory by taking a few additional courses after starting the program).

PhD - Agriculture Business & Marketing

Graduate (PhD) Program
Eligibility:
  • MS/M.Phil. /M.Sc. (Hons.) in Agriculture Business and Marketing / Marketing and Agribusiness
  • MS/M.Phil. /M.Sc. (Hons.) in / Agricultural Economics / Development Economics / Environmental & Resource Economics / Rural Development
  • MS/M.Phil. /M.Sc. (Hons.) / MBA 3.5 in Agribusiness / Economics / Marketing / Business Economics / Public Management
  • Minimum requirement for admission is not less 3.00/4.00 CGPA 

Intra-disciplinary Qualifications: The admission committee is satisfied that the applicant’s knowledge of the primary area (level 7) has sufficiently prepared him or her to undertake the course of study of the doctoral program (or, in the opinion of the admissions committee, the preparation can be deemed satisfactory by taking a few additional courses after starting the program).
